Read the Bible in a Year!
Reading the Bible daily is an incredibly important part of the Christian's life.  By reading just a few pages a day, you can read the entire Bible within a year.  This plan encorporates ideas from many of the yearly Bible reading plans available, and we believe that this method is one of the most edifying.

For example, some Bible-in-a-year plans include three passages each day:  one from the Old Testament, one from the New Testament, and a Psalm or Proverb.  We feel that it is easier to read one book at a time, and the reader gains much more from reading the Bible books as a whole--the way they were intended to be read.  So we alternate between an Old Testament and a New Testament book until you have read each book in its entirety.  This allows for variety without chopping the books up into small pieces.  Additionally, certain passages--such as large portions of Leviticus or the long geneologies in 1 Chronicles--can be difficult and "wordy", so it is is a nice change of pace to read a Psalm along with these passages.  This is a great combination of both methods.

Other plans try to organize the entire Bible in chronological order.  For instance, they will insert the book of Job into the middle of Genesis.  We feel that this interrupts the flow of the individual books, and it is better to take each book as a whole.  However, there are a few Davidic Psalms that are helpful to read in the context of the events that inspired the psalm, so that the reader can better understand David's heart.  We have incorporated these into the appropriate passages.

Here are some of the advantages of following this plan:
  • The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are spread out over the year, so that you are reading one of the Gospels every three months.
  • Old Testament and New Testament books are alternated.  This keeps a constant variety and ensures that you are regularly reading a portion of the New Testament.
  • Different types of Biblical writings (histories, epistles, prophets, wisdom literature, etc.) are spread out over the year, allowing you to focus on the different genres and helping you to get the most out of each book.
  • With repetitious passages, such as the Levitical codes or lengthy geneologies, we include a Psalm with each day.  This also allows for greater variety and regularly exposes you to different types of Scripture passages.
  • Books that give an account of the same or similar events are spread out over the year (e.g. the Gospels; Samuel/Kings/Chronicles).  God inspired these stories to be recorded more than once, and this study plan allows you to regularly revisit these stories throughout the year.
  • Some of the key Davidic Psalms are incorporated within the corresponding Biblical narratives, so you can better understand how God was working in David's life as the events occured.
  • The book of Psalms is actually a collection of five books:  Psalms 1-41, Psalms 42-72, Psalms 73-89, Psalms 90-106, and Psalms 107-150.  These five books have been spread out over the year, so that you aren't reading 150 Psalms straight through.  This gives more variety and allows you to gain as much from the book of Psalms as possible, since the book will frequently be before your eyes throughout the year.
  • Whether you're reading the Bible for the first time or you've read it fifty times, we believe this plan is one of the best for offering simplicity, variety, and edification.

Read God's Word in a year with the suggested outline below.  If you start reading at the beginning of the year, the dates are listed next to the corresponding Scripture passage.  If you start reading any other time of the year, we suggest starting at Day 1, regardless of the date.
